Clearly, 4 wheels are superior than 2 on the brakes - more rubber on the road. But the bike is much lighter, hence a far superior power to weight ratio - so in a straight line and on sweepers, the bike storms away.

That's true to a point. Cars also have better aerodynamics (generally speaking). Relative drag is much more restrictive for a bike than it is for a car. So cars do win when it comes to absolute top speeds, and the laws of physics keep it that way.

the thing is... Haslam could be taught in one day to go as fast as the host. In his lifetime, the host will never go as fast on the bike as Haslam. with very few exceptions, cars are MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to operate at the limit than a bike.

That Lambo isn't the fastest car out there and neither is the bike, so I'd say that was a fair competition between car and bike. The Yamaha R1 has 180hp and 20hp is a big difference on a bike

The ducati 1098 would well and truly out handle the r1. The r1 is also claimed. They put out similiar hp stats on dyno's and the 1098's torque is actually higher, despite the the yamaha claims. All assuming stock. Its a much faster race bike. The R1 has about 10 more ponies at the wheel, so it might win the 1/4...but the torque figures are relatively even, so would be interesting.

yamaha would never claim they have more torque than a v-twin with more displacement...its physics... v-twin produces more torque, inline 4 produces more hp...where did you see that yamaha said they had higher torque???

What a load of rubbish. Power is the product of torque x rpm. The Ducati produces its maximum torque in a different part of it's rev range. 2007 1098R 90ft/lb @ 8,000 rpm 160 hp @ 9750 rpm. V twin does not essentially produce more torque. That depends on engine efficiency and BMEP.2007 YZF-R1 87.0 @ 10,000rpm 180 hp @ 12,500 rpm

I dont think you mean 1098r because that is a lot higher, 1198 cc 180 bhp.

The duke has the midrange torque/launch out the corners, which would result in a similar top speed on the straight as an inline four.

But Ducati still seem to dominate the World Superbike Championchip, they have won more races then all the Japanese maufactors put together. Ducatis are more expensive mainly because they are hand made and are more exclusive compared to mass produced Japs.

Yes, but those bikes are extensively modified, they can't be called anything even near stock.Ducati is pushing to be able to use 1200cc v-twin against 1000cc inline 4's because the cost of modifying their current 1000cc's to compete is just too much.Dont get me wrong, I love ducati's. Just that more power at the same weight is going to be faster. Not saying its a superior quality product, just faster.

But you got to remember, jap bikes dont hold on to resale value at all as opposed to Ducs that have less depreciation. Gixxers are nice new ninjas the same but a Ducati 1098 well Id pay the premium hands down!!!

very close.... Top Gear tested both the ordinary Gallardo and F430, and the Gallardo won by somewhere around 0.1 sec. , so they are very close too each other.... but again all comes down too the driver.. You can see videoes where both wins over each other

That's just the plain Ducati 1098, too. The Ducati 1098R would do even better. The 1098R has 20 more horsepower and about 9 more ft-lb torque.

He may not be lying, I bought a 1098, and a cheap helmet. No sense in a $700 brain bucket if a $180 one has the same safety ratings. The difference of $520 is almost enough for a set of slip ons. I suggest the iCon Mainframe helmets, you can find them around $150-$250.

In the 70's, Bell Helmets had a great sales slogan. "If your head is worth $10, wear a $10 helmet. If it's worth more, wear a Bell." Saving money on safety gear is a false economy. Wait a week, or a month if you have to, and get a GOOD helmet.

Both great driver and rider. Tiff Nedell vs Leon Haslam (son of Ron Haslam). I'm a fan of both Lambo and Ducati but the bike holds the higher placing for me. Why? I can't afford the Lambo for the kind of performance the bike can offer for a much lower price. Plus, if you're ever a hardcore biker, you'd understand the thrills of riding compared to even driving a supercar. The message is: unless it's a supercar, beating a superbike is hard.

L's are V's, but V's are not L's Kind of like how a square is a rhombus, but not all rhombus' are squares. They probably said V because L is kind of rare and most people may not know what that means. Valid point though, L's are much nicer than other V configurations.

i dont think the issue is what kind of helmet he should get, its the bike. No helmet will save u when you crash your brand new r1. NOBODY should start out on a 1k. stick to a r6 rather than the r1. the 6 will beat the r1 in almost any race thru the canyons. Oh and get a shoei, i love my arai, but swapping out the visors is a pain in the ass.

One more thing that needs to get pointed out, that 1098 is a standard, there are also S and R models which are lighter and more powerful with a better suspension set up. There is a 12% power increase and a very significant weight reduction in the rims which will improve cornering ability, in addition there is a better steering stabalizer ohlins front forks and a race ECU that are all options when purchasing the bike.

While I love GSX-R's because of the awesome performance to price ratio, you'll have to remember that it's not all about power. Ducatis tend to be quicker on the track because they are thinner, and for somereason make the rider more confident at higher speeds. Also the light weight and biggest brakes ever on a sport bike mean that the 1098 can drive deeper into the corner before having to brake. Still love GSXR-s though.

No matter what people imply, Italian supercars and superbikes will always rank in the highest demand and popularity. Not necessarily stating they are of the best quality, just that they generally look the most visually appealing and uphold the rarest quality attributes. Lamborghini, Ducati, Ferrari...Or Porsche, BMW, Yamaha, etc. You will of course choose the Lambo, Ferrari, and all other spaghetti vehicles.

yes but there are 3 versions of this bike 1098, 1098S, 1098R, that was only the basic one in the clip. The 'R' was 4 seconds a lap faster when MCN tested theM in Jerez spain. The Ducati Desmosedici RR (moto gp replica) is faster again, so should have no probs with an Enzo

Midnight, I agree with you completely. The only discrepency is that the $22k duc is the 1098s model. The Base 1098 is $16k, if your dealership is charging more than that, you need to report them to Ducati North America and they will have to drop their prices or lose their dealer license for Ducati. The S model has Ohlins suspension and lighter rims, also a Ohlins steering dampener. Personally, I say save that extra $6k for a Termi Exhaust and tires. 1098 Eats rear tires because of the tourque.

couple of notes, both are very fast drivers, one races bikes, one tests every super car, next the lambo is stupidly expensive, thirdly that isnt the fastest ducati there is the 1098r and also the desmocidici. and the 1098 isnt really speaken the fastest around a track, try a blade, or r1 or gixxer or zx10, so to summerise, bikes rule. cars suck. or to make it even, how much do moto gp bikes cost, somewhere around 150000 ish lol

Who claims that the lambo is better than the ducati, doesn´t have the guts to ride a bike at that speed, so they stick to what they can do without danger. The dumb-ass-pussy-man 4 wheels. Anyway, chiks love bikes better than a car. Ask any rider!

have any of you ridden at 180+ mph? youre talking like its even needed. World superbikes and motogp bikes rarely go faster than 180. lowermid-range acceleration is the biggest factor in a motorcycles speed. Peoples obsession with top speed is sort of silly. Ducati could gear and design the 1098 to go 300 mph but who the hell would want it?
